Mandarin lesson- Week 6
In mandarin today we created a piece of artwork on rice paper using black ink. It did kind of get really messy but that was the fun part! We had to paint out a step by step panda with black ink which is actually harder than it seems! I think that my panda actually turned out great for my first time doing that sort of art style. The hardest part of the artwork for me would definately have to be painting out the chinese characters! Thanks Tracy.
Passion Project Reflection
I felt that my passion project presentation went really well. I know that I need to work on speaking more fluently and slowly. So I will definitely work on that for the next presentation I do. I also need to make sure I double check all of my answers to my questions twice! Over all I feel I did a really great job and hope I will be better next time!
The Big Think- Room 10
In room 10 our focus for maths has been fination literacy. We had to complete this task within our budget of $10000. I did all of the the tasks and finished within the budget with $988.5 left over. Over all I am really proud of my achievement and hope you enjoy looking at my slide.

Adding Detail
In room 10 we have been doing adding detail in the morning before we do literacy. I really think this has helped improve my skill of adding detail. I think slide 8 was my best slide.

Narrative Short Stories- The Girl With The Black Eyes
In room 10 we have been doing short stories. I decided to name mine 'The Girl With The Black Eyes.' My main character is Midnight.
She was alone in the world, adopted and had no friends. Then a visitor shows up. She is nicknamed 'the death Curse' and carries a heavy burden. The girl with the black eyes.
Passion project
For my passion project I decided to do Kate Morgan. I am going to present a speech and then after if we have time I will get the class to play a quiz kahoot on her.
Mandarin Lesson- Week 4

Duane Kale
Last Friday we had an amazing guest speaker come in and inspire us with his story. The message he sent me was to "Aspire to achieve and don't give up" I am so grateful that he came in to talk to us because I learnt so much from his talk. His name is Duane Kale. Duane Kale was an amazing athlete when he was younger but he was involved in an unfortunate accident. He then became paralyzed from his waist down but still manages to pursue his dream, swimming. I was so inspired by Duane's talk and I hope that others were to.
Here are some photos of his visit.

Mandarin- making dumplings
Last Wednesday was the day that the school got to experience making dumplings. Seeing as I am part of the fan dance group I got to go behind the scenes of making dumplings and I also got to supervise. honestly it was a very hectic day but was all worth it in the end. I had fun switching jobs between supervising, cooking, taking photos and serving the dumplings. I had so much fun with this event especially because I and the other fan dance members got to stuff our faces full with as many dumplings as we pleased in the end. A huge thanks to tracy for organizing this event and letting me be apart of it!
Here are some photos of the exciting day.

High jump Discription
DESCRIPTION
1 Introduction
– What the text is going to be about
– A short description of the subject
– Can include a definition
|
I have chosen to do my report on high jump. high jump is a very popular athletics sport and is also quite intense at times. There are loads of different techniques and materials you will need to be able to do high jumping.
|
2 Body of the report
- Each paragraph begins with a topic sentence which previews the information in the rest of the paragraph
- Sentences after give more details
- Each paragraph should give information about one feature of the subject
- May include technical language
|
First let’s talk about different warm up techniques.
The first warm up you can do to get you ready for high jump is one that helps you to develop a good J (run up/in) first you start in a corner about 8 meters away from the mat. Next you run towards the matt curving into a sort of semicircle. Make sure that when you start take big strides towards the mate and as you get closer run in smaller steps once you are in front of the mat stop. You should be facing the mat side on. Repeat this until you feel comfortable enough with your J to jump, but before you do make sure you practice the next few exercises.
This next exercise will help you find out which leg is your dominant leg so then you can jump easier. Stand upright and lean ford, which ever leg you put out to catch yourself will be your dominant leg (the leg you run in with and jump with.
This next exercise is called the scissor kick. Stand upright facing the mat side on next to the mat. Make sure the bar is not on the mat/poles. Next kick your dominant leg up off the ground first then lift the other one up. Now try doing this jump onto the mat
|
3.
Repeat the same steps as 2
|
Ok now that we have the exercises out of the way it’s time for the real deal. Make sure you have stretched your legs before attempting high jump. Highjump is basically when you combine your J and scissor kick together. So start about 8 diagonale metres away from the mat. Now run up in a semicircle motion once you are facing cide on from the mat and about at the middle of it. Now lift Your definite dominant leg up and over the bar.
|
4.
Repeat the same steps as 2
|
Hopefully you landed on the mat safely now get up off the mat and try again! don’t worry if you didn’t get over without knocking the bar off just keep trying and you will get better. Remember to practise your exercises.
|
- Can summarise the report
|
Highjump is a very popular athletics sport and is also quite simple to learn. With the right technique, training, advice and exercises you can be on your way to become a high jump champion. I hope you learnt something about highjump and found this description about it helpful. Remember to practise!

HNI Values
For the past week I have been working on my HNI values work. I knew straight away what I wanted to do for mine. I decided to do a short story for each of the values. The theme was what would our school look like with out the values. Here are photos of my final out come
Term 3 Highlights
This term has been an extremely busy term. There has been so many fun events open for participation such as The social, Eletric extravaganza, the Kapa Haka festival and many more. I have worked hard to achieve many goals of mine and still have more to accomplish before the end of this year. On Friday (the end of term 4) I was very please to find that I had accomplished my goal of getting wild card points. Here are my favourite highlights of this term.
Maths
I am very proud of the effort I put into my maths learning this term. I have learned more things that will hopefully benefit me later on in life. I still have a few goals for term 4 which I hope to complete but overall am very pleased with all my test results from this term.
The Electric Extravaganza
This term I was able to participate in the Electric extravaganza. It was a very exciting night with my family watching. I participated in the choir and also in the fandance group. This term I and the other fandance members have worked very hard on our new fan dance. I was very excited when I got the chance to have one of the two solo's with another fan dance member Sunshine.
The Social
All of the year 7's have been very busy this term at PE sessions learning the dances for the social. It was a very fun night and I really enjoyed it.
Puerty
In the past couple of weeks we have been learning about puberty. This has been a very fun learning experience. Of course there was a few awkward moments and LOTS of funny ones too.

Position and Orientation- Evidence of my learning
In room 10 our maths focus for the past two weeks has been position and orientation. I have learnt a lot from this maths subject, but one of the key things I have learnt is how to use a protractor. Here is a picture of one of the activities we had to do in one of our workshops with Miss O'B. we were given clues of which letters go where and from then on we had to figure out the positions they are meant to be in, we only placed two in the wrong area!

Speech
In room 10 we have recently presented our speeches. My speech was on herbal remedies and how they are safer and healthier for your body than antibiotics. This speech was inspired by my mum who graduates from her school this year, 2017 and will become naturopathy and herbal medicalist.

Room 10, Week 7 and 8 inquiry
Healthy Bodies - Strong Minds
Weeks 7&8
Global Learning Intention: We are learning about being healthy.
BIG IDEA: By keeping physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually fit, we are holistically looking after our HAUORA, (Health).
Big Questions for learning weeks 7&8:
What is a stereotype and how can it affect the way I think about myself and others?
|
Authentic Contexts:
Stereotypes
The way different cultures see beauty
Positive body image
The effect of the media on self perception
Profile photos
Photos from google. Use these if you want.
- Pin the profile photos around the classroom. Divide students into eight groups and give each group several profile sheets from Copysheet: Profile. Allocate a starting photo for each group and allow them a set period of time to come up with a profile of that person. Each group then moves on to the next photo, until they have worked with all the photographs.
Completed profiles
Consider: How accurate were your profiles?
Our profiles (me,Luca and Ollie) weren’t really accurate. We only got like one or two people right and even then it was only a few things that we got right about them.
What sort of things did you make mistakes about? (Age, hobbies ...)
It wost mostly age and career
Why do you think your profiles weren’t always accurate?
Because someone may look different than what they are on the inside
What information did you use to make your profiles? (The look of the person, what they were wearing, their culture, their age, what you think you know about people like that ...)
The look of the person and everything that was also in the image with them
Is this a fair thing to do? Why or why not?
No it is not a fair thing to do because you might judge someone by their look and never go near them but once you start talking to them they become like your best friend.
What should you do before you make decisions about what a person is like? (Really get to know them, find out about their personality, talk to them ...)
Get to know them, the real them. Spend time with them and find more out about them.
Create a list of the dangers of stereotyping people into categories.
· It can be incorrect.
It is also harmful.
It can be emotionally damaging to the people being stereotyped.
It could lead the people being stereotyped to committing suicide.
It can lead to people having depression and not having any friends.
Knowing and Respecting People
1. Before I make a judgement about a person I should:
Get to know them and if I don’t know them maybe I could ask someone about them or do some research.
2. It is unwise to stereotype people because:
It could potentially hurt their feelings and it also kind of counts as bullying. You also might not even know them but you still fit a stereotype with their image which is uncool.
3. We can make people in our school and community who we think are different feel
welcome by:
Treating them normally
Introducing them into your friend group so you can all be friends
Help them when they need help
Step i if they are having mean things said about them behind their backs or to their faces.
4. In future when I meet new people I will try to …
Be kind to them
Not judge them on their appearance and culture
Try to be friends with them
Step in if they need help
Cultural Perceptions of Beauty
- Brainstorm – What do you think is the perfect body? Draw/ cut pictures out of magazine as to what they think the perfect body is?
I don’t think there is a perfect body. Everyone is a different shape and size you shouldn’t have to change how you look to gain what everyone thinks is “beauty”
- Is there such a thing?
No there isn’t because every body is perfect the way it is.
- Are children and adults pressured to LOOK a certain way?
Some might be because of bullying or tradition and culture
- What is vanity? How does it affect ‘The perfect body?”
It is pride and when people admire their own beauty so it might make people love themselves the way they are
- Culture – What is it?
Culture is what identifies you and your country. It also can be tradition that originates from long ago ancestors
My ideas and thoughts...

The Customised Body – The perfect body?
What practices are you aware of?
I am aware of neck stretching (african/asian?),foot binding (chinese) and lip/ear plates/discs (african)
- SCARIFICATION – cutting patterns in the skin, is a common way for African women and men to decorate their bodies. The cuts heal over, but raised scars remain on the body as elaborate and long – lasting patterns. Scarification video from National Geographic.
- Elaborate gold jewellery, pendants, beads, neck chains, earings, and a headband are used by Masai tribe in Kenya.
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g4ZW6oSLnMM A more modern view of scarification.
- Metal/ brass rings. Burma or Ndebele people of South Africa.
- Nose plumes of the Ergpactsa chief pierce the soft tissue between his nostrils. The skin of his ear lobes has been stretched by wooden discs.
- A wooden disc inserted between his lower gums and lips. Lip discs – Suya tribe Brazil.
- Foot-binding – 19 photos of Chinese foot binding
- Generation of women in China had their feet bound to attract men, the custom was supported to have been handed down since ancient times. “How to bind feet” pg 105 - 06Body Bizarre, Body beautiful
- Tattooing, piercing
- More technologically advanced societies, they also change the shape of their bodies, special diets, exercising, cosmetic surgery, liposuction, botox.
In some cultures the ideal body can be very different to the perception and beliefs in New Zealand.

This is a more modern approach to scarification and downright silly body alterations. My point of view there.
